Old favourites
This year, try mixing new styles with pieces you know you love. After all, this is the time to feel comfortable as we ease back into life outdoors. While there are some key trends to look out for, there are some summer staples that return every year – and for very good reason.
If you love your wedges, for instance, don’t shy away from popping those on with some of the styles that are in this year. Likewise, if you adore a simple, light summer blouse at this time of year, invest in one that will make you feel good. Put your own stamp on the trends this season.
Crop tops
Feeling ready for something different? Make the most of the warmer weather with a crop top. These have been gradually making a comeback in recent years, having had their original moment in the 90s and early 00s. However, 2021 is the year that they’re going to be everywhere.
This time, it’s bralettes and spaghetti straps that are the height of fashion. Team yours with high-waisted shorts and add an oversized blazer – as seen at Hermès – for those slightly chilly summer evenings when the sun’s gone down.
Glitter
Glitter isn’t just for Christmas. After a year locked away, this summer is all about going big, and adding some sparkle is the sartorial tonic we need. But to give glitter a twist, this season is all about fluid, metallic silver. Models at Paco Rabanne, Balmain, and Louis Vuitton all wore this silvery glitter with a futuristic twist.
Tap into the trend by opting for a shimmering midi skirt or hint at this style with a silver-sequinned bag.
Sheer
Sheer materials aren’t a new thing. You might have worn sheer tops and dresses in the 00s. but this time round, the look has had an update. Try layering your swimsuit with a sheer maxi dress – as seen at Dior – while you’re wandering along the beach on your staycation. Alternatively, you might want to take inspiration from Fendi and wear a sheer slip dress paired with a blazer. This is a bold, fun trend that works in a range of settings.
Which trends will you be trying? Will to take the plunge in a sheer dress or go glittery this season?
